Drumcree decision: Restricted Orange Order parade given the go-ahead to walk down Garvaghy Road by Parades Commission

The Orange Order has been granted permission to walk down the Garvaghy Road on Sunday morning for the first time in 28 years.

The historic determination ends a ban of almost three decades, and follows a landmark High Court challenge during the summer.

The parade will take place early on Sunday morning – a compromise brought forward by the Portadown District.

They had proposed 60 Orangemen taking part – but that has been cut back further in a ruling by the Parades Commission on Friday afternoon.

35 people will be allowed to take part in the parade, which will leave Drumcree Church no later than 08.00am and will disperse from Carleton Street Orange Hall no later than 09.30am.

The only banner permitted will be that of Portadown District LOL No. 1 – which may be carried or displayed during the parade as it proceeds along the Garvaghy Road.

No supporters will be allowed to join the parade, or congregate along the route – or around home on the Drumcree or Dungannon Road.

As proposed by the Orange Order. no bands may participate in the parade.
