The rock superstar Sting, aged 72, singing at the Belsonic festival at Ormeau Park in Belfast last night.

He told an audience believed to be just shy of 20,000 people that Northern Ireland had showed the world that people can live in peace.

The former frontman with the 1970s and 80s band The Police delighted the crowd in a performance lasting one hour 40 mins.

He came on stage just before 9pm after the support act, which was Debbie Harry – the American singer with the band Blondie.

Sting is on a tour of Britain and Ireland, mainland Europe and north America.

He was in Cork the night before Belfast, Tuesday, and this weekend will play in Suffolk and Nottinghamshire in England.

The he moves on to a concert in Paris, France, and then two in Athens, Greece before moving on to other countries including the Netherlands and Germany.

In August he begins to play concerts around the United States into the autumn.
